We had the La Grandest time!

Of course I have put pictures in the reverse order, so you start with our victory-bath in the river (Post-nap, yes, Brook will nap ANYWHERE possible). This river was in the same park as one of our stops. Our next to last stop after a very hot haul from quaint downtown LaGrande out to the Flying J travel plaza for some beers, (holy shit this ride had a lot of drinking in it. Not all of it mandatory...) across the tracks where both Dustin and Brook...

...Flatted out again. I blame the wide gaps between the tracks, the heat, and the fact that we were probably spinning like 17 mph (holy shit!!!) when we crossed. The supply of tubes from the local shop sure came in handy, nice of us to clean out their supply of 700x23's. After the fix it was on to La Grande's suburb of Island City for another drink (lemonade, thank you ladies!) at a non-descript Chinese restaurant (I think... between the five of us who went we could probably piece together the whole ride) then on to Dutch Bros. for a shot (iced, no fucking around, two stops to go, then the finish) and up a shady road to lakeside park, where we were treated to another beer. On to the Longbranch. Last stop, then... victory?
Team Boise at the start
This is the porch where it all began. This is the porch where it would end. 1st place: shared by Amy and Anna. Next three in: D-bagg, Warren and Brook. Time elapsed to next finisher....roughly half an hour. Couldn't find the kegs the whole time. No matter! La Grande was slain.
Dustin fixing his first flat of the trip. Note he had not had the chance to ride his bike at this point. These are the shredded tires and tubes from jumping off the bike rack doing 75. We all pitched in and watched Dustin change tubes and tires the whole trip. Offering lots of advice.

Hold on to your mustache

Just giving everyone a heads up on a good friend and his upcoming race. This fellow has decided to jump into the mix of bike event organizing in what could possibly some of the most dismal weather Boise can see. Therefore we here at Bikes and Rec are going to support the hell out of him and run some pixel-support from this end. This guy brews beer for a living folks, this is someone you want on your team.

MAGIC MUSTACHE RIDE. Rhodes Skatepark. Saturday, December 20, 2008. Sign up @ 2:00 p.m. Race starts @ 3:00 p.m. $10.00.  The biggest reason we are pimping so early is that a mustache IS REQUIRED for this race (ladies are apparently being told to "get creative" so I suppose some of you sissy-boys out there could do the same).

Just thinking of you makes me wet.

HUGE thanks to the WBC for the amazing evening that was HELLR4CER. These images pretty much sum up how I started the race, felt during said race, and eventually how I feel I came out in the end. I will be represented as the green pumpkin and the orange one can be HELLR4CER.

P77's photo's are amazing as always. Well done.

As far as casualties are concerned, I seem to have done something very strange to my right knee and I lost my tire irons at Scuglia's. I consider all of the above acceptable losses. I can always get a new knee.

Stay posted here for the MAGIC MUSTACHE RIDE information as it will be available soon. WATCH THE SKIES and remember... Bikes and Rec loves you.

Excellent Adventure Re-Cap

Well well well.... This has been long overdue and I apologize.

We can finally say that we did it. All the hard work and planning paid off huge. For our first event, 30 people would have made us smile. What would 84 people do for us? Pray that everything goes smoothly and then jump for joy. Tons of new shining faces came out on Saturday to show their love of biking and we couldn't have been more honored. Thank you so much for pedaling your asses off and giving us great pride in our adventure.

Here's a basic run down of events if you missed out on the festivities.
  • 5:00 - 5:54: A slew of siked riders came out to Kathryn Albertson Park to sign up
  • 5:55 - 5:59: Riders tore open their manifests and planned a tentative route
  • 6:00: The madness began and participants took off in various directions
  • 6:00 - 7:00: Seth and I frantically setup the final stop and grab more supplies to sustain the unexpected crowd.
  • 7:06: Beau Burley runs into the final stop taking first place for the men
  • 9:00 - Infinity: People get their drink, food and dance on!

Men
  1. Beau Burley: $100
  2. Danny Kester: $65
  3. Sean E: $35

Women
  1. Kristi Burley - 2nd place overall: $100
  2. Fran: $65
  3. Brittney Gadd: $35

Thank You's

  • Brook and Bart: Bikes and Rec - For way too much help! Couldn't have done it without you guys
  • Kevin Boland: Big Horn Brewing - For his generous keg donation and beer glasses
  • Jacob Black: Bitter Creek/Red Feather - $25 gift certificate and t-shirt
  • Bodie Lee: Red Feather - Tasty Jams mixed throughout the night
  • Jenna Durfee: Dawson Taylor - $20 gift certificate
  • Cory: Falcon Tavern - (2) $20 gift certificates
  • Tom Patek: World Cycle - Tons of socks, tubes, and some hats
  • Evan Cecil: Newt & Harold's - Lovely swag package
  • Dan: Casanova - $25 gift certificate and a t-shirt
  • Scott: Raw Sushi - T-shirts and hats
  • Logan: Bikes2Boards - PINK CHROME BAG!, Swobo handlebars, Oury grips
  • The Flicks - Two movie tickets
  • Corbett: Vitamin Water - Cases of Vitamin Water
  • Tara + Crew: Red Bull - Energizing Red Bull to kick things off

  • Peter and Lisa Peterson: Elmer's - $15 gift certificate
  • Steve Smith: Steve Smith Photography - Free photo session
  • Mark & Tammy Masarik, Kurt and The Girls - showing some love at the stops

Apparently the consensus it that you all wouldn't mind having this event again next year. We'll have to see what we can do and please correct us if we're wrong. Thanks again to everyone.

Beer Excellent to Each Other

Seth and Ray most certainly put on an excellent adventure.  Great manifest, amazing turnout, tasty weather, and nice schwag at the after party.
I used a new strategy for this race, which netted me a nice 75th place finish (out of almost 90...).  I picked my commuter bike, complete with rack and double panniers packed to the brim with ice and frosty PBR, lots of smokes and a sit-down bullshit session every 2 or 3 stops.  The long haul out to L13 was a perfect stretch to have other riders dip into the bags and pass beers around to all.  By the time I hit the after party, it was all I could do to shovel in a couple of burgers (MOST of the way done) and finish a cup of Kevin's Kolsch before pedal-stumbling home and trying to start a fight with a minivan.  (Not even the dudes IN the van, no, the van itself).  Goddamn good job, fellas!  Start working on the next race!
I talked to my friend Jake from the Ram brewery and he says he has a good ride and wants to put it on sometime in early December.  All I know so far is the tentative name:  Magic Moustache Ride.  I'll post more as it develops.
Cheers,
Brook
