Day after too. Cleaning up was sugar-coated by a day spent by the fire drinking beer, carving pumpkins, hiding under umbrellas and patting each other on the back.

All in all we estimated the money raised to be very near $2000. Good work. This money is set to be delivered to the BBP to assist them in educating people about bicycles, and how to ride them safely in our fair berg. Not all of the money is accounted for here at the house. Lots of it is floating around in space and you need to collect it, and get it down to the BBP. Don't send it to us, we have our own stuff to take down. We are doing our drop on Friday, maybe we will see you down there.

This is the next ride.

It is a benefit for the Boise Bicycle Project.

Our goal is to raise $1000.

There will be cowbell.

On Oct 2nd at 5pm we will begin doing laps around Sore Bloke's block (902 Sylvan). It is roughly a 1/4 mile, cut off from major traffic, and, well, in front of the house. The money will come from donations from friends and family, places of business, strangers, etc. Get sponsored per lap or per goal (say 25, 50, or 100 laps). Come ride and have fun. Collect your sponsored money and we will give it all to the BBP. The focus for the donation will be bicycle education and safety. Apocalyptic stuff like cars and bikes living together.

Grill, condiments and coolers will be provided.

It is BYOB & BYOBBQ/side dish.

Kids are welcome as long as you are keeping track of them. Dogs are not welcome at all.

In addition to your sponsorships we will play a game of Assassins. (Thank you Portland Velovulture!). For $1 you can buy an "assassins tag" to hang on the bottom of your seat, thereby making you an assassin and also a target. With a tag intact on your bike you may assassinate other riders by taking their tag. You may only assassinate while your tag is intact. If you make it back to the pit with your tag intact and tag(s) from other bikes, you may write your # (the one you will receive from sign-up) on it to be entered into a raffle for a brand-spanking new Reactor PBR messenger bag (as well as other swag as yet to be collected...)

All proceeds from the Assassins game go toward our goal of $1000.

We will be letting the neighbors know, and encouraging them to come out and ride, or at least show their faces in support. The course will be well marked for cars to use

EXTREME CAUTION, due to bike awesomery.

All bikes are welcome.

Helmets encouraged.

Fun will be had.

Laps BEGIN at 5 and will continue until we are done. (Cowbells silent by 10pm, I think)

Of course I have put pictures in the reverse order, so you start with our victory-bath in the river (Post-nap, yes, Brook will nap ANYWHERE possible). This river was in the same park as one of our stops. Our next to last stop after a very hot haul from quaint downtown LaGrande out to the Flying J travel plaza for some beers, (holy shit this ride had a lot of drinking in it. Not all of it mandatory...) across the tracks where both Dustin and Brook...

...Flatted out again. I blame the wide gaps between the tracks, the heat, and the fact that we were probably spinning like 17 mph (holy shit!!!) when we crossed. The supply of tubes from the local shop sure came in handy, nice of us to clean out their supply of 700x23's. After the fix it was on to La Grande's suburb of Island City for another drink (lemonade, thank you ladies!) at a non-descript Chinese restaurant (I think... between the five of us who went we could probably piece together the whole ride) then on to Dutch Bros. for a shot (iced, no fucking around, two stops to go, then the finish) and up a shady road to lakeside park, where we were treated to another beer. On to the Longbranch. Last stop, then... victory?

Bicyclists to Lead Funeral Procession of Eagle Bicyclist Jim Chu

Family asks local bicyclists to participate in unique memorial

WHAT: Bicyclists will lead the funeral procession for Jim Chu from Boise to the burial service at Dry Creek cemetery in Eagle in a silent remembrance honoring Jim’s life and love of cycling.

Local bicyclists interested in participating are welcome to attend the memorial services in addition to participating in the procession. Helmets are required and the procession will be led by a motorcycle escort.

WHERE: The memorial will be held at Cathedral of the Rockies Emmaus Center, 717 N. 11th St. Corner of 11th and Hays in Boise. The procession will begin at the Cathedral and end shortly after it reaches Hill Road. The cars in the procession will then continue to Dry Creek Cemetery in Eagle.

WHEN: Friday, May 29, 2009. The memorial will begin at 1:00 PM the procession will begin once the memorial is over. Bicyclists interested in riding in the procession will need to be at the church at 1:45 p.m.

Dear Friends and Family of Jim Chu,

On May 19, Jim Chu was riding his bike during his lunch hour, in the bike lane and with a helmet, and was struck from behind by a Boise ValleyRide van. He passed away Thursday, May 21st at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center as a result of severe traumatic brain injury.

Memorial services will take place at Cathedral of the Rockies Emmaus Center in Boise, Idaho at 1:00PM on Friday, May 29th. If anyone has photos of or stories about Jim they would like to share, please forward them to me by Wednesday, May 27th to have them potentially included in the video memorial. Following the service, bicyclists will lead the procession to the burial service at Dry Creek cemetery in Eagle. It will be a new tradition in Boise. This will be a very special and unique ceremony, and we hope you will join us in honoring Jim and his life.

Additionally, a “ghost bike” ceremony will be held tomorrow, on Memorial Day, at 11am near the site of the incident. A bike has been painted white and will be decorated with flowers. Location is about 300 feet north of the intersection of Aeronca and south Orchard south of I-84 on Orchard on the east side of the street. If you attend, please part along Aeronca for safety, not on Orchard.

The procession/escort is in the works. You will be lead by a motorcycle escort towards the cemetery. You will not go all the way to Dry Creek. It will be a silent ride. 215.25 Miles of hangover

John STYLED US OUT by bringing an army of burgers, buns, chips and all the fixin's. All neatly packed into his cooler, and biked over on his boat trailer. Yes. BOAT TRAILER. A new King of Pedal and Paddle? We shall see in August... Oh, and he manned the grill all night!

Thank you everyone who came out to ride. I have 861 laps recorded, and know for a fact that that's not all of them. Like the title says I figured it to be 215.25 miles. People donated cash to boot! $90 total. I've got to brag on Josh a little about the donations, $40 of that came straight from him. Thanks, Josh, I hate the cancer too. I never made my promised 100 laps. The weight of being a host and keeping pace with the drinking limited my time in the saddle. I did make 70 laps, and quit counting for a while there, so I still feel good about my lap contribution. I said I would have prizes for people with over 50 laps, and I do, I just forgot on Friday. So, Brady Calahan, Josh F., David (sorry, your last name eludes me), and Steve (of the Kuna crew, right?) all had over 50, and so there is a prize for each of you. I will leave the Winco bag of goodies just behind the fence next to the cooler full of Hamms. Drop by and snag one when you're in the neighborhood. (I expect you to take down a Hamms or two as well... More bragging on Josh, he made the most laps, 114. Ryan King was next with 105, then Brady with 80, then the rest of us. Great riding with all of you! Thanks again. The next ride coming up is Dirty and Pink all ladies race on June 6. Then the Red Hot Riot (at the VAC this year) on July 11 (tentatively). One more thing: I have Ryan's water bottle it is washed, filled and set in the cooler along with the Hamms. Come get it when you can.

UPDATE: Saturday we had some late-comers for the ride. Sean Donovan, Kim, Dorian & Stacy all showed up ready to play. Hamms all around and a huge donation to the LAF, $47!! Hells Yeah! Our grand total to send off to the Foundation stands at $137, nice. Thanks again! The prizes are still out there, slightly protected from the rain. Come collect!

No kidding! We are going to ride 100 miles for fatty. This will be a kid-free event with no entry fee but what you bring to drink and any donations you wish to make to the Lance Armstrong Foundation (they HATE cancer). My house, short course, lots of shenanigans, ballyhoo, whimsy, etc. It's a crazy idea and a great cause. Kit up, lace up, roll up, and get on it. Lots of beers and lots of laps around my relatively safe block. (400 laps or so) I bought the official shirt and swag, and will dole it out as I see fit. This COULD present an opportunity for a few impromptu beer relays...

UPDATE: Don't be scared to come and ride if you think that you HAVE to make 400 laps, or 200, etc. As a GROUP I believe we can reach the goal. It would be amazing if we had 400 people doing one lap and drinking one beer. That's 400 beers that hate cancer! I will commit to 100 laps (shit, now I AM committed...) and make sure there is propane for the grill, ice in the coolers at the pit stop and a pile of wood for the firepit.

MORE UPDATE: Sounds like quite a few people are coming, and even more people are interested, curious, possibly apprehensive? At a good pace it would take a long-ass time to complete 100 miles. Foolish to begin at 6pm, that's why you are COMING OVER to ride with us and ease the burden. We got a sitter so we could focus on being on the bikes much of the time, and be attentive (and drunk) hosts the rest of the time. If you drop by with the kiddos for a lap and a brew, great! Our house is not all thorns and rusty nails, we are just having a night "in". There are races and rides the next day, but a couple laps and an equal number of beers won't crush ya! Big Business is playing the Neurolux later in the evening, you can make it to that too. Laps START at 6, so come early and lube up. (DZnuts community tube...?)

First person at each stop should take the Polaroid and the button, that is your prize for first to the stop. DO NOT take the ink pad! put them back every time! Each stop has an ink pad, you have ten fingers and there are ten stops (they are all different colors so don't even think about it.) figure it out.

If for some reason the pouch is missing at the stop, write down a description of the area.

Bring your ID. There will be NO ONE underage at the end.
DO NOT bring any outside alcohol to the end, riders will be taken care of in that regard.

At the end, we expect you to have a sheet of paper with ten different colors stamped with your individual fingerprint. Put your name on that. If you need a print out for this go two posts down and print it. If you can't print, mimic that picture.

The end is the Visual Arts Collective, 3638 Osage St. Garden City.

Bring a ten-spot for the end, we have no change.

For those of us with short attention spans, here is the scoop again. I hope you are getting ready. There are a few great tricks to this one so dedicate some brain time to thinking about that.

Remember:

-you will need to be eyeballed to this site today at 5:00 p.m.

-having a posse together at your "start" area might be fun.

-having your posse spread around the city might not be a bad idea either.

-this is a 21+ endpoint, you will not be admitted without proper identification.

-you DO NOT need a fancy camera-ma-phone to do this race. Once you start all you will need is a good route written on a sturdy piece of paper.

-you will need a piece of paper ready with 1-10 written upon it or printed from this site. WRITE YOUR NAME ON IT!

-if you don't want to do the race but want to come and rock out DO IT! Just ride your bike on down to the VAC. (it is only five bucks if you don't want a spoke card or free beer)

-don't expect any swag, that shit is dead to us.

SOME THINGS WE WOULD LOVE:

-while you don't need a camera for this ride please bring it (video would be awesome) and take copious amounts of pictures along the way.

ONE HUNDRED BEER WEEKEND: Starts at 8:00 a.m. Friday, May 1 and goes until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3. GOAL: consume 100 beers during the allotted time. RULES: a beer is a beer, can, bottle, draught, whatever. 33 1/3 beers a day people. Get with it.

HERE"S THE SCOOP. We here at BIKES & REC have a new deal coming right up and thought it was about time we let everyone ponder it. On SATURDAY MAY 2, 2009 DOS will begin. We will not however all be getting together to start this thing in the traditional manner. This ride will start from WHEREVER YOU ARE AT THE TIME. At 5:00 p.m. MST a manifest will be deployed from this website. Here are a few items that may help you wrap your mind around this thing.

-This race will be entirely image based. There will be no addresses, riddles or otherwise to help you find the stops.

-The physical manifest is simply a piece of 8.5 X 11 paper with 1 through 10 written upon it. Make sure you leave enough room between numbers for signatures. We should also have something like that ready for you to print if you wish to go that route as well.

-If you wish to print out all of the pictures before you ride, fine. If you can drag the Internet around in your pocket, great. If you simply take good notes and plan your route before you take off, wonderful.

-These will not be wildly obscure pictures they should all be relatively easy to pinpoint.

-the end of the adventure will be the registration. And that will be at: VISUAL ARTS COLLECTIVE. This is a 21+ event at the end so bring your I.D. $10.00 gets you a spoke card and admission to the ROCK SHOW which includes, BEAUTICIAN, MICROBABIES and DISCOMA.

-Please feel free to comment below if you have any questions. We will get them answered. Remember, BIKES & REC LOVES YOU!.

P.S. You certainly do not need to ride the race to come to the show, however we would HIGHLY encourage riding your bicycle to it.

Sorry for the lack of attention here. We've been over somewhere else for awhile barely hanging on by our fingertips. This VELOCACHE thing has really taken off and it's consuming a lot more of our time than we thought it would (and that's a really good thing).

The most important part of these distractions is how much it has gotten me out on the bike(s). I know that would be the obvious reason but it's also been more than that. I have met some new people that share my interests, real good people, that I am proud to call my friends. I have gotten to know a few folks that I did not know as well before, and that is awesome. I know, I know, real touchy-feely shit right? Well, we need more touchy-feely shit in this world. A LOT more.

That being said, it looks as if Thee Warlocks Bicycle Club is getting ready to kick out another jam. That's rad huh?

I mop first, then enjoy a PBR and smoke while it dries, then on to the laundry.

With Red Fang playing tomorrow, there is a certain miasma of guilt that hovers about my person as my head expands and deflates with plans and schemes to leave the house as early as possible to excitedly (to the point of nervous fidgeting) prepare myself to venture out in public to see this show. This guilt often results in me doing a few of the more noticeable chores that I have been avoiding all week.

I am pretty good at keeping up with the laundry for some reason, not perfect by any means, but competent enough. The rest is a crap-shoot at best. The key chores I target before going out and leaving my family to fend for themselves, helpless, big daddy bacon strutting from the nest out into the village to stir up the shit with this week's paycheck, a fuzzy beer-buzz and my newsboy cap pulled smartly over one eye, ARE 1) sweeping and mopping ( I use a lot of whatever floor stuff is in the cupboard, so the "clean" smell lasts until morning) 2) the aforementioned laundry (at least 2 loads washed dried AND folded (most important step)) 3) scrub the toilet (yellow may mellow, but orange doesn't rhyme with anything, and has got to get flushed) 4) a load of dishes (these wait until morning for maximum attention as I do the dinner and breakfast loads together) finally 5) clear off and bleach the kitchen counter (this is like a bow tie, ascot and scarf worn together to prom i.e: FUCKING BRILLIANT).

I just got a chill, good style, like an 80's song you get to hear in the car all by yourself and you belt it out the whole way home from work, all green lights, window down and you pull in and there is a new magazine in the mailbox and the kids are taking a nap, kiss your wife real good and sit in the back yard, good crossword puzzle, the sun peeks out from a cloud and you squint and your face turns hot and you die just a little bit and float up over your body and figure out the last answer to the crossword, but before you go back you float inside the house and get yourself 2 cold beers and drink one on the way back and don't tell yourself, now back in the body and you open your eyes a little, small tear streaks down, and you say: GODDAMN RIGHT IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY. Finish that "first" beer and get the chores done because you are going out tonight to a rock and roll show.

Call your wife early in the evening because she doesn't give a shit what slices are left at Pie Hole at 2:50am. See you at the show.

Cheap date night

Got a tip from my friends at the Ram that this Saturday there is a beer release happening at the Stone House. $10 for "samples" of three brews (last time ended up being 20 ouncers until the kegs ran dry) and a pretty decent buffet. I believe it begins at 5pm. Biking down with my wife and some BFF's to wash away the hangover I'm sure I will be wallowing in after an evening with Red Fang. The last release was for the crushingly smooth, silently devastating Lost Reindeer, easily my second place winter beer to Sierra Nevada's Celebration. There was a whiskey-barrel aged IPA, a nice dry stout and a very drinkable pale ale in addition to the seasonal. I have to allow that the Ram is not a place I choose to eat very often, but damn it's hard to pass by without stopping in on the brewers to see what's on tap and what's to come, the specialty brews are so damn good. These guys have supported all of our events one way or another, and a ten-spot is a no-brainer to ride down and support them. See you there.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME?

This is our diversion to keep our asses in the saddle, share some secret spots and discover new perspectives of our beautiful city. Here's how it works: pick a spot to stash the cache (in this case a politically correct re-purposed bicycle chain bottle opener: the "key"). Take a picture from the exact location of your cache. It may be as obscure as you can dream, or in the spirit of "Velo", a more well-known spot to keep the race for the prize quick. The key should be planted (buried, insinuated, camouflaged, etc) in the same spot the picture was taken, thus when a Velocache participant finds the key, they will be standing on the site of your unique perspective, secret spot, state of mind?, etc. Anyone who spies the post may participate, and the game begins at the time of posting. The Magic Mustache Ride Went Fuckin awesome! Thanks to everbody that showed up and partipated and those that were there for moral support! A grand total of 23 hardcore mashers signed up I was blown away. 20 of them were there @ the end to rip it up. Brady took first place finishing in 1hr 22min.and received a booty of 75bucks, Bobby got second place @ 1hr 22.10min he racked in 30 bucks and a custom made and painted skate deck compliments of Marty (magnum) Hall, Jeff Baker came in 3rd in 1hr 26min. and got 20bucks you guys slayed it! There were 2 blown tires that I know of and Ryan Weeks snapped his chain, like all boyscouts he was prepared fixed that bitch and mashed on ( this happened to happen @ the the boyscout stop ahhhh snap). The best upper lip hair was definitly between Jeff Baker and Ken. I would like to thank all artists that contributed to this race. A.Mortician for the killer spoke cards and bitchen blog art especialy the Brook Reynolds, Jeff Baker for the sick paint job on the keg fridge that was given away, and Magnum Hall for the rockin skate deck. As far as casualties are concerned, I seem to have done something very strange to my right knee and I lost my tire irons at Scuglia's. I consider all of the above acceptable losses. I can always get a new knee.
